Many J-School students got their first taste of campaign reporting on election day this past fall. One section of J200 taught by doctoral student Jeff Cannon set out in search of human interest stories about city and county races in Bloomington and Monroe County.
County recorder candidate injects passion in a (sometimes) drab field

It’s 8:35 p.m. on election night and Sam Allison, the Democratic candidate for Monroe County Recorder, is being careful not to look too excited. As supporters cheer for results showing him ahead of his opponent by 125 votes, an early sign of his eventual victory, he remains calm, giving little more than a few high fives, a smile here or there and a nod to neighbors. James Brinegar is an avid racecar fan. Outside in the driveway of his and wife Nancy’s home sits the RV he planned to travel in to races throughout the country during his retirement. When Election Day arrived in November 2004 and the excitement of voting was underway, Indiana University senior Nathan Woebkenberg didn’t have time to go to the polls. He wasn’t even in the country. But it was no relaxing fall vacation to the Bahamas. Nathan was thousands of miles away fighting in the war in Iraq. Full story
